Cycling is naturally a little kinder to the joints and here too the Lake Faak (Faaker See) Region has a wealth of opportunities for all ages and abilities.
The 32-km-long route round Lake Ossiach is good way of exploring the countryside and also links up with the River Drau cycle path (Drauradweg). Starting in East Tyrol, this trail runs right through Carinthia. Tip: take the train from Villach to Spittal and then cycle back along the Drau to Villach. It’s also easier to attempt the Gail Valley cycle path with the help of the train. Go by rail to Hermagor – with your bike on board – and pedal back at your own pace. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from by the wayside.
Lenght: 11.7 km Elevation gain: 113 m Maximum gradient: 10 % Start/finish at the Maria Gail underpass - up to Mittewald - Lake Faak - continue on a level trail to Drobollach - turn left before Egg and climb the steep hill. The trail travels past "Türkei" (=Turkey, the name derives from the Turkish invasion in the 15th century) and on to St. Niklas. Turn left and climb the mountain to the Grosssattel plateau. The short but steep ascent will be rewarded with marvelous views of Villach and as far as Drautal Valley. We recommend a short break! The tour continues across level terrain, through a forest and then down to Kleinsattel and Prossowitsch, back to the departure point. And now imagine doing this tour twenty times, one loop after the other, just as the cycling elite did back in 1987 in the course of the World Championships. Lake Faak also has countless routes to offer – no wonder, the world cycling championships were held here in 1987. Mountain bikers should head for Afritz where there’s a permanent downhill course. It may be downhill all the way, but the narrow paths and roots make it a test of stamina.
Difference in altitude: 1,407m. The beautiful Villacher Alpenstrasse panorama road offers stunning views of Carinthia, including the lakes around Villach and, continuing further up the road, the mountain ranges of the southern Alps. The Villacher Alpengarten alpine garden is located at an altitude of 1,500m above sea level. It is open daily 9am - 6pm from June to August. Flower enthusiasts will be able to enjoy both the unparalleled flora of the Southern Alps and fabulous views as far as the Julian Alps. Do not miss out on a stop at one of the numerous restaurants and country inns along the road!
